Half Round Coil

This is our preferred coil variation. This type of coil is great because it gives the “staple” coil effect without having to use more than one coiling wire on the base same wire. You see less of the coiling wire through the threading wire.

If you’ve read our basic coil tutorial, you have the foundations to be able to make this one. It’s just about using different wires with the same steps.

This variation is using:

Base Wire: 21g Round, Deadsoft

Coiling Wire: 18g Half Round, Deadsoft

Threading Wire: 30g Round, Deadsoft

Wrap the coiling wire around the base wire with the round side touching the base wire and the flat side facing up.

This will create the flat staple effect that these types of coils provide.

Add the threading wire around the half round as you work, and start wrapping the threaded half round around the base wire.

You’ll want to be even more diligent in this process as the half round can be finicky if you’re threading too much. Switching between threading and coiling more often will ensure a smoother process.

And here she is!

I embellished this one with goldfill 30g, you can embellish with anything to change up the colors/appearance.

Enjoy!

Round v. Half Round

Here you see the difference between the basic coil v. the half round wire coil.

We love how you get the staple effect.
